Cannizzaro reaction

Cannizzaro reaction is one of the special reactions of aldehydes

An aldehyde not containing Q-hydrogen atom on treating
with a concentrated solution of caustic soda (NaOH) or caustic potash (KOH)
undergoes mutual oxidation and reduction reaction to give respective alcohol and
sodium or potassium salt of respective carboxylic acid.This reaction is called
Cannizzaro reaction.

e.g.
i) Formaldehyde reacts with a concentrated solution of sodium hydroxide to give
methanol and sodium formate.

2HCHO + NaOH-> CH3OH + HCOONa
formaldehyde
methanol sodium formate
